Paul Hobbs, famous for his work in California as well as Argentina’s Catena Zapata Winery (through 1997), has started this new winery in a partnership with the children of Mr. Marchiori, the owner of the vineyard from which hails their first wine, the 1999 Malbec. Paul crafts the Malbecs with the ultimate amount of attention, endowing the wines with a distinctive character offered by the ”terroir” of the most eminent areas of the Upper Mendoza River Zone. The fruit for the 1999 Cobos comes from a 40 year old vineyard, the Marchiori vineyard, which sits at an elevation of about 2500 feet.

Wine maker notes

This is a new project for 'flying winemaker' Paul Hobbs - Vina Cobos. Hobbs began his intense interest in Argentina and its vineyards when in 1988, he visited Argentina for the first time. He was a young California winemaker at the time, and had been invited by José Catena, whom he had met at UC Davis. Today Hobbs is more involved in Argentina than ever while still maintaining his winemaking in California.
